isnt the ram loading times the real bottleneck? even if you had a nasa built horsepower super ssd, all data has to pass from ram to the drive. and the ram is of an ancient type so you really cant do anything about it.
unless some braniac comes up with a way to install a modern type ram chip into the mv, wich i deem as very unlikely.

but having a 300 gb sounds sweet tho. how far do you guys reckon it can go ? 999 gb hd? more? we`d all be set for life in wich case.
the world sure has come a long way from floppies and zip drives.

As for the high capacity HDD's, I recently tested a FAT32 formatted desktop 750GB 7200RPM PATA HDD in my MV-8000 and worked with no problem. UNTIL... I connected the MV to my Mac (Yosemite) and PC (Win7) via USB and the MV's HDD went from showing 750GB to showing only 137GB Max. I don't understand that shit.

SSD's are so cheap now you can get a 120GB SSD from Fry's Electronics for $40 - $50. The main reason I'd add an SSD is for the extra silence vs a platter HDD.

What I did notice on the platter HDD is that the jumper has to configured for "Cable Select" and not "Master" on a Maxtor and Western Digital HHDs after you format them on a PC to FAT32

I'll keep ya'll posted ...

Hey guys new to the site, new mv8000 user, purchased the zhenio 120gb pata/ide ssd and a cloning kit. I got the drive to format on my laptop but it only gave me the option to use NTFS and not fat32... Also there were no instructions on jumper settings I've tried both settings but the MV will not format or write to the drive. Any ideas or comments on what step I'm missing? Everything seems to be in place and functioning. Should I try and reformat the drive in windows to fat32? Thanks again.
Chris.

Reformat the MV's drive to FAT32. NTFS won't work in the MV... I tried it.

I'm running fat32 format right now 8% in. When I popped the orig 40 back in I got a green screen? I unplugged the HDD and the MV powered up? Not sure why but it seems the orig drive isn't showing up when I plug it in with a USB adapter either... THANKFULLY you guys have all the demo materials posted so looks like I'll have a busy weekend! I'll keep up on the post. Thanks Juke!

Cool!

I really need to work on both of my 8800's and 8000's hard drive and fan mod.

Wow. Good luck to you guys on HD mods. I did the standard upgrade from the 40GB to the 160 GB and it will be years before I'm out of room. Mostly running midi tracks though.

The MV8800 is really efficient with RAM use on samples too. When I see 512MB RAM as max, it seems like a huge amount compared to Akai MPC models. 4000 and 5000 don't even come close.

I stuffed about 70GB of samples on the hd too. Just some stuff I collected over a few years.

Right now sample use is minimal though.

3 Moog Mother 32's. Waldorf Blofeld, M-Audio Venom, Korg Minilogue, Arturia Minibrute, Moog Werkstatt, Roland JV1010, and a Roland System 500 on backorder cover the sounds the MV8800 doesn't have. Really a great sequencer. Midi data is nothing to store, so will use little space on projects.

Yeah, these Zheino PATA SSDs are a godsend. Did the installation a couple of months ago and it´s working flawlessly so far.

I'm going to Mod both of my 8800's with a Patriot Blaze SSD next! They are on sale at Fry's Electronics!

Dope! Keep us posted...

Keep in mind that the 8800 needs PATA SSD drives. SATA ones won´t work. Of course you could use an adapter to go from SATA to PATA, but that´s a hack and may or may not work.

Whats the max GB the 8800 will see effectively?

I know I have put a 1GB RAM stick in and it shows correctly, but heard it can glitch out exceeding it, so I wondered if HD behavior might get same results. Like as soon as you exceed the 160GB mark, will it possibly not write correctly?

Anyone exceeded the 200GB mark with data and getting no issues?

I've gotten a Seagate 7200RPM 700GB HDD (FAT32) to fully work on the MV-8000. But as soon as you connect the MV to a Mac or PC via USB, the HDD reverts back to 127GB. Aaaaaaarrrrggghhhh!!!

I'm just now getting ready to mod my 2 MV-8800's so I'll keep ya'll posted on the HDD.

I took out the stock 40GB platter HDD out of my MV-8800 and installed a Syba 44-pin IDE dual CF card reader with two 128GB CF cards. Both CF cards shows up on the MV but 1 CF card is identified as the CD/DVD drive. Because of that, the CD/DVD drive is not accessible at all. More to come...
