JX-305: Recorded part keeps responding to patch changes

How can I change to a different patch, without the currently selected part or recorded material having a patch change to the new one at the same time? Say if I've recorded a piano patch, then want to add a different patch on top of the piano patch, then when changing patch the piano changes to that patch instead of remaining piano, and it prevents me from building up songs. Other times I want to add some strings to current material, but then the bass line patch takes on the string patch, sigh...

P:S I've tried setting "patch remain" to both on and off under edit>system but noticed no difference.


It seems quiet in here but hopefully there's someone who can help with this rather basic problem...
