MV-8000 hard drive to solid state drive?

Post by Synthtron »

I am way late to the MV-8000 section of the Roland clan forums.

Anyone know if The MV-8000 can use a solid state drive?

Is the MV nation website being maintained?

I've tried registering for MVnation last month with no reply. I just picked up an MV8800 and would like to discuss more about it. There's a facebook group that has a decent amount of traffic on it.

As for the SSD, I have a few SSD's that I'm thinking of installing, mainly for the noise reduction though. I think that the biggest problem is that the MV8800 can't see hard drives much bigger than 120GB, although I've read that if you format it as FAT32 before installing it that it can see more space.

Ha! Just tried installing the SSD and was met with a "Disk not ready" error when I tried to format it. I have a 300GB SATA hard drive that I'm going to try tonight, though.

I read somewhere that you need to set the IDE drive to master, and my SATA/IDE adapter wasn't configurable. The SATA hard drive didn't work either, but an old 80GB IDE notebook drive worked just fine.

Note that you need to save the new default song after formatting the new drive, otherwise you'll get a disk error message when you start up.

You can use a an IDE SSD like those from Kingspec orany early PATA models from Intel and they work fine. The main advantage is that the SSD doesn't bog down as it fills. OTOH the MV has a major bottle neck so you projects and sample won't load with any kind of blazing speed.

*If you want to reduce noise the BEST thing you can do is to install a super quiet 80mm fan. I used the Noctua but as long as you don't go cheap you'll never have to upgrade. Also keep in mind that the fan is for exhaust NOT intake so you can dial the rotation down and the MV will be so quiet that you have to look at to know it's on. The Noctua fans have inline resistors in the package.

Hope this helps.

Like pacific02 & NNITRED stated, the SSD can work in the MV but it's not worth the trouble, time and money... I know because I made it work with an OCZ Vertex 4 256GB SSD.

Install that SSD in your computer where you will benefit more from it.

Can you advise on what connectors or adaptors you used to get the Ssd installed please. Cheers

I am not sure what to do. I would like to have a SSD in the MV-8000 because I feel it would be more reliable. I would hate for my current hard drive to crash or get corrupted.
I do not feel it would be a waste of money to have it done.
I HATE using a computer for songwriting The MV-8000 is a solid piece I could see using for years to come for my sequencing.

I would also like to install a SSD for the reliability and less heat / noise generated.

Can anyone post if they have already done this mod ?

I have not done because I am not sure what to do and I do not want to waste money for things that are not compatible using trial and error.
I wonder if someone at MV-nation had this information. I was not able to locate anything too specific and MV-nation is dead so it is not allowing new registrants.

I've got to dig up old pictures and videos that I have from completing various frankenstein mods to the MV to include the SSD mod, the L.E.D. fan mod (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEwbxuhiHzQ) and my MV HD with over 300GB of samples (proving that the MV can show over the 127GB limit) mod.
