Alternatives for MV8-OP1 (Hacking project.)

Post by Seccione »

Hi guys,

Out of frustration for not being able to find a MV8-OP1 board, I started thinking of using some other output board as a replacement.

I haven't found full schematics for the MV8-OP1, but based on the clues in MV-8800 service manual, I have kind of an idea what to look for.

So, I peeked at the schematics of SP-808, and it looks like it's SP808-OP1 might be compatible with MV, with just a small tweaks. (DAC clock speed, cabling)

I made a topic to Gearslutz about my findings, but no one seems to be interested. :D

Has anyone here tried something similar?

Is there any other output expansion boards (from Roland) that could be investigated?

All input appreciated!

Cheers, mate!

Relieved to see that I'm not the only one without the expander... :/

I would start at getting a digital input to work. If you can get that to work then you can move on. The digital/optical input is the most important part of the MV8-OP1.

Digital input is challenging, because I don't the specs how MV8-OP1 does it.
I'm certain that the sync clock in SP808-OP1 is configured differently, but without schematics for MV8-OP1 it's about rolling dices.

Analog multiouts are relatively simple to get working, so I'll treat that as a 'proof of concept'.

Once ("if") I get something working, it should be easy to get the rest. Maybe.

Ok, I actually got this working!

The strange wire-thingy on the top-right corner is the modification I had to make to configure DA converters to be compatible with the MV. :D

Now I have 6 extra output in my MV, and I paid like 90€ for it!

At some point I might check out if I could get the digital i/O to work, but those analog outs was the thing I was looking for.

It looks like the only shot I have at getting this feature for my MV 8800 hinges on how successful you are with this hack. Good luck.

As mentioned above, the analog outputs are already working.

I haven't had time to work this further, but the next thing I'll do it to make the 'hidden' third MIDI-output somehow usable.
(I'm using my MV as the master sequencer to control other gear.)

You don't think you'll take a shot at the digital input? That's the goodie in my opinion.....
