Custom sound design in the Roland JD-XI

Post by ranzee »

I'm getting into custom sound design a lot lately - and I cannot believe how deep the JD-XI is. I've started off a little video to get the juices flowing, but I actually want this thread to have people contribute their tips and experiences.

This vid shows me making custom drum sounds using the cool software JDXI Manager:

I've got 2 more in editing process - but I'd like to do one more after that from all the cool tidbits you guys contribute

That's a great video, very inspirational, it made me switch on my JD-Xi right after watching the video and actually use the editor to make some sounds (rather than write code to improve the editor itself as usual)!

I'm looking forward to the other 2 vids already!

Thanks baz55.

I've completed the video on custom ANALOG sound design on the JD-XI - using the JDXI-Manager software. Part 3 will be up in a few days. Is there anything you guys want me to cover - I'm planning on doing a tips and tricks video for Part 4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZO44W510JA

What I think could be popular would be a video on how to design famous popular synth sounds with the JD-Xi (this could provide enough material for another whole series of videos...). ;-)

As in: how to recreate famous lead/bass/brass/string/whatever sound from famous song xyz using the JD-Xi and the editor.

I'm not sure I'd be any good at that. I once did one of these for the DX7 - it was so difficult to please people - they are very "protective" of their favorite artists :)

Very well done, like all previous ones.

I have embedded them all together in one page here:
http://jdxi-manager.linuxtech.net/videos.html

In this last one there is only one minor point I have to correct: the Edit Select buttons in the 'Digital Synth Editor' windows are simply for enabling/disabling which partials are affected by knob movements on the JD-XI itself, they are the equivalent of the '01', '02', '03' buttons on the JD-Xi when in Digital Synth 'Tone Edit' mode, not a way to edit multiple partials at once from the editor.

Hi, just wondering if anyone is actively working on sound design and has any posts on lead sounds for the digital sound engine?

I am working based on the steal this sound book entry.

https://books.google.ca/books?id=Jz1JMn ... ng&f=false

I am trying to create the "sax" type lead sound that was commonly used in some songs like below using 2 oscilators on the prophet. I obviously doesn't have to sound like a prophet but am trying to get the same qualities in the sound from the JD-XI.

The sound is here. around 2:33
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gaT6HtLGlU

I think they used DX7's for this song.

Any to tips of how to get this to work?
