Hidden powers of Split ?

Post by AaronPDX1 »

So this Electronic Musician review of the DS (6/16) says, "You can split the keyboard up to sixteen ways."

Say wha? Did they get this wrong or am I misinterpreting? As far as I can see you can only split at one point, between 2 patches.

Please confirm or enlighten me.

There is nothing hidden about it :-)
In Performance mode, you can assign 16 patches to the 16 channels and have them all limited to a specific range on the keyboard.
Could be interesting for those who want to use samples that are not to be "stretched out" too much, so a sample per octave for example.

Hermax, can you walk me through the process briefly?

You're saying that once discrete areas are assigned, all are available on the keybed at once?

Holding back excitement until this is confirmed. :)

Thanks!

I never used it for now, but it sure is possible. Maybe better download your copy of the DS Parameter Guide to have a clear overview.

(first create a performance in 16 part mode with all the patches you want to have)
From the manual:
(page 19)
1. Press the [PATCH/PERFORM] button to make it light.
2. Select a performance that you want to edit.
3. Press the [SAMPLE IMPORT] button and [DAW CONTROL] button simultaneously.
The EDIT MENU screen appears.
4. Move the cursor to “PERFORMANCE EDIT,” and press the [ENTER] button.
5. Move the cursor to tab, and use the [<] [>] buttons to switch the pages. Goto page "KBD"
(page 20)
Kbd
Specifies, for each part, whether or not the keyboard controller section will
be connected to the internal sound generator and MIDI OUT.
Normally you will leave this off; you can turn it on if you want to layer
sounds.
OFF, ON

---> Set this ON for each part

Go to Page:
RngLo, RngUp

---> Specify lowest and highest note for each part.

That should do the trick.

Thanks man. I played with the parameters a little and was able to set the part to a range, and got some overlap of parts where the ranges overlapped, but I have yet to try 3 or more parts each with different range. Will report back once I do!

Pleased to report I got this to work. Not the quickest process to set it up (anyone know how to set a key range point in the edit area by simply hitting a key?) but it works...

Nice!
Just out of curiosity, why exactly do you need this?

Needed because I have some cover tunes I'm doing that call for 3 sounds; having them all on the keyboard at once is convenient.

I only wish it had an option to illuminate the key split points on the keys themselves! :)
