Roland XV-2020 Windows 10 Driver - finally!

Post by Douglas Costa »

Roland XV-2020 Windows 10 USB Driver

After trying a lot of tips to make this wonderful piece of gear work through USB, I finaly discovered a really working driver.

Roland A-800 Pro Driver works Perfectly!

First install A-800 Pro from Roland's website.

After connecting XV-2020 USB, Windows will not found it's drivers.

Go to Device Manager, Right Click the unknow device, go to Update Driver, and choose to Select From a List.

In the list, find Roland section and select A-PRO.

It's Done!

Hi Douglas,

Thanks for your posting.

I have a Roland XV5050 and am on Windows_10.

I d/l the XV5050 Editor and connected the module to my PC (via USB) - no MIDI cables.

I also d/l the Roland A-800 Pro driver.

Correct, Windows does not locate the drivers.

Within Device-Manager, I right-click on the icon to update-driver. However, this is as far as I can get (please see attach.). As regards to Device-Manager, this is the Device-Manager on my PC (and not within the XV5050 Editor? - I just want to rule out the obvious).

Many thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul,

not sure if this will work but I suggest to do the following (the options to chose may be called different on your computer, I am working on a german version of Windows and therefore don't know exactly the correct english names of all menu options, but I think you get what I mean):

1) connect your XV-5050 to your computer

2) open the Windows device manager, chose the XV-5050 in the list of devices, right-click on it and uninstall the device -> select to uninstall the related driver as well if this option is available

3) disconnect your XV-5050 from the computer

4) uninstall the A-800 Pro driver using the uninstall.exe program which is available in the directory where you unpacked the A-800 Pro zip file into

5) reboot the computer

6) install the A-800 Pro driver again with the setup.exe program delivered with the driver

7) connect your XV-5050 to your computer, have it install whatever the system wants to install as a driver for it

8) when XV-5050 appears in the list of devices in Windows device manager right-click on the XV-5050 and chose "update driver"

9) chose "Browse my computer for drivers"

10) chose "select from a list of installed drivers on my computer" (or something similar)

11) de-select/unclick "show compatible hardware" ! this should expand the list to all available drivers

12) chose "Roland" from the vendors list and then "A-Pro"

13) in case of any warning to not install because the driver does not match the device: ignore it and chose "continue anyway" or similar option

Now the A-Pro driver should be used for your XV-5050, but it might appear as "A-PRO" in the list of Windows device manager rather than "XV-5050"

Hope it works :-)

Hi Schorsch,

I have tried for over an hour now but to no avail, unfortunately.

I tried the process many times but did not manage to get any further - same results I'm afraid.

But I really do appreciate your time and effort here as always.

Much appreciated,

Paul

Hi again,

Just spent some more time on it -

I know this sounds like a bit of a can of worms, but I was able to make a slight step forward, although you may not view this as being significant:

If I connect a USB from the PC to my Electro 6, and then a MIDI OUT from my Nord into the MIDI IN of the XV5050 module, the virtual-keyboard (of the Editor) reflects exactly which notes I am playing on the Nord. Also, it triggers the presets on the XV5050 and I can 'hear' the sound of each respective instrument. And, obviously, the MIDI LED on the front-panel of the XV5050 lights/dims in tandem with my playing/triggering.

However, what I am NOT able to achieve is program-change (from within the Editor to the XV5050). Instead I am presented with an 'error' message.

I experimented with the different options in Device MIDI Set-Up and the result in the screenshot below seems to work the best (albeit without program-change).

Cheers,

Paul

Paul, I did not tested with XV-5050, but it should work too.

The first time you connect via USB it will appear as Unknown Device at Windows Device Manager, and after you install and select A-800 Pro driver it will appear as A-PRO.

At the Editor you have to select A-PRO MIDI IN and A-PRO MIDI OUT.

For me it works everytime, even after changing the USB Port (in the case I have to select A-PRO Driver again).

Does it works for anyone, besides me?

This is the way I used my XV-2020 before, via an external Midi Gear.

It's a shame it didn't work for your XV-5050.

I couldn't find a way to edit the main topic, so here comes some Updates:

Update: USB Midi Thru Works too!

Update 2: USB Midi Works with iPad using Gen (generic) setting on XV-2020. You can redirect Midi In to Midi Out using Audiobus to play XV tones and iPad Instruments together.

Update 3: iPad's Patch Base XV-2020 Editor Works!

Hi Douglas,

I really appreciate your help, thanks a lot.

For some reason I never receive email notifications from this forum, hence the late reply.

Someone very kindly is going to help me with my laptop on Thursday so I will let you know . . .

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Douglas,

Schorsch64 very kindly helped to resolve the matter. There was a 'dialogue' I was not able to locate/manipulate.

Very much appreciated everyone!

Cheers.

Brilliant. Been using MIDI to connect the editor for years now, saw this and thought I'll give it a try, works fine! Just for reference - I have 4 other Roland products connected by USB and it hasn't affected them either.
Thank you for sharing this :)
