EXP-09 Complete piano collection for DS-08

Post by aliaksej »

Hello!

Considering DS-88 for buying as digital piano for my small daughter and midi keyboard for yamaha MOXF6.

I need a pretty decent piano sound which doesn't expose noticeable difference between differnt notes/velocities.

I played DS88 and didn't like default DS piano sound. Loud notes are very different from mid-low.

What is about EXP-09 Complete piano collection? Do it's pianos sound more organic then default DS piano? Are sounds comparable to digital pianos?
What's about Motif XF piano from external developer? Does it sound organic?

Is DS-88 keyboard suitable for learning piano? Or it's better to choose digital piano?

I need one more or less decent piano sound so my daughter can learn piano.

You might consider one of the "NX" model used stage pianos, such as the RD-700NX or 300NX, or RD-2000. I have my DS88 atop my 300NX and the 300 is the better sounding default piano, even though 2015 tech, in my opinion. The playing is about equal. NX indicates "SuperNatural" which was/is one of Roland's sound engines.

And you know what opinions are like, but I didn't find a piano in the exp. pack that I liked better than the default.

This fellow gives his DS88 a workout.

And it IS a $1,000 class machine.

I think I'd look at the new RD88, too, which is also in a plastic case, but has current tech.

Good luck.

I would have to agree. Pianos on the Roland was supossed to be better than the Kogrs, but so far I liked more the piano sound on my former CASIO CT-X800 than the ones on the Juno. Big dissapointment there.

I bought a Juno da88 a few weeks ago. I didn’t really know about the Rd88 at the time because my local store didn’t have one in display.
I like the Juno.
Is the RD88 that much better? I only find maybe 2 or 3 pianos in this expansion pack that sound very good. The rest, kinda eh.
I’m actually thinking of saving up $$ to get the FP90 in addition to the Juno.
Hopefully that will come down in price sometime in the near future.

In general, I think Roland has more timbre variation from quiet to loud than is typical of most other brands (or most real pianos for that matter).

If you have piano sounds in your Yamaha that you like, you can also use whatever 88 you get to play the sounds that are in the Yamaha from a more pianistic action. Some other options in a similar price range have more MIDI flexibility than the Juno DS, which might be useful for this kind of combining of the two boards. In addition to the RD88 which has been mentioned, also Casio PX-5S, Kurzweil SP6, Korg Kross 88.
